A Croswell woman is sharing her love of cooking and her Mexican heritage with others through a new food truck.

Cynthia Mendoza opened Mama C’s North of the Border food truck with her husband, Scott Lerma, late last month.

The truck serves traditional Mexican food, such as tacos, burritos, tostadas, enchiladas, quesadillas and more. Mendoza said she also makes her own fresh tortilla chips.

Mendoza got her love of cooking from her mother, who shared her Mexican heritage with her through cooking. Mendoza helped her mother cook tamales once a year before Thanksgiving, when her mother took orders from locals in their own little cottage industry.

“I enjoy cooking,” she said. “I just enjoy it.”

Mendoza and Lerma quit their full-time jobs to open the truck. While Mendoza has catered private events before, this will be their first time running a food truck.

“I figured, why not try it? Why not take that leap of faith and just try something different?” Mendoza said. “So I did.”

Mendoza said she enjoys the freedom and low overhead cost of the food truck, where she can pick the events she wants to attend. A brick-and-mortar restaurant has to have regular hours and doesn’t lend her the same freedom.

Mendoza said she plans to attend events in the Blue Water Area, such as the St. Clair Art Fair, Summerfest in Marysville and more.

Croswell resident Stacie Bales stood in line for the food truck while it was parked outside the Party Store Marathon gas station in Lexington Monday. She said she is excited to have more food options in the area.

“It’s authentic and very good food,” she said.

The truck will next be open from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Marysville United Methodist Church, 721 West Huron Blvd.
