Michigan’s Best Local Eats: A Taste of Soul by Biggie’s serves up ‘wholesome’ soul food
YPSILANTI, MI — A Taste of Soul by Biggie’s serves “wholesome” soul food, said owner Victor “Biggie” Allen-Swanson.
A Taste of Soul by Biggie’s, 1004 West Michigan Ave., in Ypsilanti, focuses on fried chicken, collard greens and macaroni and cheese, as well as catfish, candied yams, rib tips and other traditional soul food.
“I enjoy serving good food to people,” Allen-Swanson said. “I do this because I love this. And I make money, finally.”
Although most soul food is often considered “unhealthy,” Allen-Swanson said, his restaurant serves more “wholesome” versions by not putting meat into all the dishes.
“We sell healthy soul food,” he said, adding that he’s also working on a salad menu. “It’s a new day and age.”
Highlights of the menu include a catfish dinner, a rib tip dinner and several varieties of chicken dinners. Each dinner comes with two sides and a piece of cornbread.
Sides include baked beans, coleslaw, fried corn, macaroni and cheese and potato salad.
His rib tips are “top of the line,” Allen-Swanson said
“They melt in your mouth and melt in your hand,” he said.
A Taste of Soul by Biggie’s is open from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Call 734-483-8360 or find the restaurant online here and on Facebook here.
