Selena Gomez Announces HBO Max Quarantine Cooking Show
Selena Gomez is already putting in practice for her new gig: at-home chef.
On Tuesday, May 5, the singer uploaded a photo to her Instagram Stories of her baked ziti with turkey, which she and her grandmother cooked that night; the cheesy dish came complete with a side of steamed broccoli and was a potential sign of things to come. That same day, she and HBO Max announced her new project, an untitled cooking show set to be filmed in accordance with social-distancing guidelines.
As Billboard reports, Selena’s new show is set to be 10 episodes long and will debut on the forthcoming streaming platform HBO Max in the coming months. And as Selena sees it, this is a natural move for her. In fact, she’s apparently been dropping hints about her culinary aspirations all this time.
“I’ve always been very vocal about my love of food,” she said in a statement to Billboard. “I think I’ve been asked hundreds of times in interviews if I had another career, what would I do, and I’ve answered that it would be fun to be a chef. I definitely don’t have the formal training, though! Like many of us while being home, I find myself cooking more and experimenting in the kitchen.”
So, what do you do when you don’t have any training? You learn. The series will pair the singer with different cooking pros as they share their secrets via streaming. Consider it the upgraded version of FaceTiming your mom for cooking advice when it’s 9 p.m. and you’re tired, but the gravy just won’t thicken.
“Blending [Selena’s] determination with top-tier culinary artists is sure to entertain and educate viewers about something we’re all trying to work through: how to make cooking at home exciting, fun, and delicious,” Sarah Aubrey, HBO Max’s head of original content, said in a statement.
In true Selena fashion, the series will also highlight different food-related charities, which are more important than ever. As the coronavirus pandemic jeopardizes millions of American’s paychecks, plenty of young people are worried about paying grocery bills, rent, and more. There’s no word yet on which charities the series will highlight, or when it will drop.
In the meantime, expect plenty of previews on Selena’s Instagram. HBO Max launches on May 27.
